Let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind

Bipolar can often be a bittersweet symphony. The exquisite passion of mania made foul by the desperate grief of depression and anxiety.

I need to hear some sounds that recognise the pain in me” – Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve

Whether a cycle of mania/hypomania, depression, anxiety or rage, bipolar produces a mixture of behaviours. And to loved ones, you may appear to be ‘a million different people from one day to the next’.

Ordinary folk can make careless statements like – snap out of it, think positively, its all in your head, mind over matter. But as much as anyone with bipolar would like to singularly implement those statements, it clashes with the very neurobiological nature of the illness called bipolar. We can try, and try, and try, to change the illness within us, but as the song goes “I can’t change my mold”.

So draw comfort from this amazing song. And know the only thing we can change, is our own self-acceptance.
